20/20 John Stossel Exposes Canada Care and Socialized Medicine
Americans currently have the best health care in the world. Why do a few want to screw that up? www.hoover.org Medical care in the United States is derided as miserable compared to health care systems in the rest of the developed world. Economists, government officials, insurers, and academics beat the drum for a far larger government role in health care. Much of the public assumes that their arguments are sound because the calls for change are so ubiquitous and the topic so complex. Before we turn to government as the solution, however, we should consider some unheralded facts about Americas health care system. 1. Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers. 2. Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians. 3. Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries. 4. Americans have better access to preventive cancer screening than Canadians. 5. Lower-income Americans are in better health than comparable Canadians. 6. Americans spend less time waiting for care than patients in Canada and the United Kingdom. 7. People in countries with more government control of health care are highly dissatisfied and believe reform is needed. 8. Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians. 9. Americans have better access to important new technologies such as medical imaging than do patients in Canada or Britain. 10. Americans are responsible for the vast majority of all …
@Armorbeast And healthcare in the U.S. is uniform? Stossel doesn’t tell you that the lottery healthcare was a small town of 7000 in Nova Scotia, and atypical for that small town and of the Cdn med system as a whole.
I recall seeing doctors set up health clinics in places in the U.S. and people w/o insurance line up for days to see a doctor for basic care, just like a 3rd world country! Never in Canada, that’s for sure!
Stossel makes no mention of this either. Some journalist.
@jzmet We can still get Fox News, but we have to specifically ask for it, they are no longer part of any news package. Even more ironic, it was Canada’s Conservatives that complained the most when they insulted our military. It’s for the best, I think Fox News enforces American stereotypes. I’m sure you could still visit. We’re very similar to the US, but I think being Canadian disconnects us from the false patriotism and propaganda that keeps a lot of Americans in the dark.
John Stossel why in the world would I want to go on a waiting list 2 weeks a month and so on in Canada when here in the good old USA I can wait forever because my insurance says it’s not necessary!
the answer to it all is for the innovators to just decide to give up some of their greed for money
If I made millions and millions and millions and millions off of a new product that could benefit millions of lives, what the hell would I need all that money for? If every doctor, insurance company ceo, innovator could just cut their high end living in half it benefit everyone with out govt ran healthcare…Greed will be the death of us all
also who gave them the average ER wait time of 23 hours? thats just not true I mean the longest anyone I know has waited is 3 hours. Also if you have possably life threatening problems like chest pains of high fever your admitted immediately.
what you fail to mention is that the area where natasha richards died is the only jurisdiction in canada where their is no medivac helicopter system to take people to the hospital. what they also fail to mention is that 85% of canadians think our healthcare system is better than the americian one.
@sl0j0
I love our health care system here in Canada. There is always room for improvement, as with anything. Message me and I’ll answer any questions you have and give you my detailed experiences.
I fell off my bike 6 months ago and hurt my knees and cut up my hands, and I say a doctor with no wait at all (it was night time) got fixed up at no charge, now I’m all better
I lost a family member and was depressed, saw a doctor about it and was referred to a grief councilor all at no charge.
This is simply not true. I’ve been to the ER probably a dozen times in my life and 20 minutes is generally what I’ve waited, the longest was about 3 hours, and that was only once. 23 hours has liklely NEVER happened before anywhere in this country. I’ve NEVER heard of it, not true.
Fuck you John Stossel. Try living in the real America making minimum wage you ignorant rich idiot. Anyone making minimum wage cant afford to be unhealthy. you are so far removed from your viewing audience you have no idea what life is like for most Americans. And go interview 2 million Canadians and see just how ineffective their system really is. John Stossel I hope you lose all your money and fame and you are ravaged with cancer. then what will you do.
@sl0j0 It fucking rocks to never have to worry about paying for health care — we just get it, and it’s not a huge problem for 99% of us. This report is really ignorant and inflammatory. It doesn’t reflect how much we like our health care system.
The problem isn’t quality, its accessiability…a lot of Americans do not have access to healthcare in the US.
people form canada …What is the truth about your health care???
The #1 item sadly lost in the reform was the elimination of an unfair, certainly undeserved Antitrust Exemption. They do not deserve the monopoly that was bestowed upon them so many years ago. Doing away with this would do a lot to drive down the costs of insurance. They should be non-profit. The bill that just passed is only a starting point. Hopefully, the Antitrust issue will be addressed again very soon.
What a great post! This made my day! Stossel is now on Faux News?! And the [smart] Canadians gave Faux the boot off their cable line-up?! I LOVE IT!!! Tabloid news, in print or on the air, is sadly believed by many foolish Americans. What a sad commentary on the aptitude of so many Americans.
It really is too bad I’ve learned so many wonderful things about Canada too late in my life. I’ve always wanted to visit New Brunswick and the beluga whales. Now disabled…they wouldn’t want me there.
5 hours??????????????/ lol I have never waited anywhere near that long in the U.S.
@DoofsterDan I think this is very well-said
Canada now that our healthcare is going to suck. Just wait you are going to find out how tied together we really are.
I’ve never spent more than an hour in an Emergency room.
Where I live in Alabama, we have one of the worst health care systems in the US. However, it depends on where you live to make that assessment because other states can brag theirs is worse. Likewise, Canada’s system is not uniform and in various places what Stossel reported is true and no matter how you attack him, you only know how it is where you live just as I only know how it is where I live. Canada, Britain and France all admit major problems and are copying parts of our health care system
@Diannakw John Stossel is not a journalist, he is a guy trying to prove his believe in a perfect libertarian society, so he attacks anything that will interfere with that idea. We are the only nation without universal healthcare, this guy got owned in the intelligence squared debate. He doesnt even do basic fact checking. He also never uses contrast or context. I hate that man, propaganda.
The U.S. leads in acute health care, but not total care. The lack of portability (tieing it to employers), pre-existing denials, reimbursement denials, and the laying off of uncollectable expense on payers seems medieval if not stupid. There HAS to be a better way. I also think there’s a difference between R&D/technology and the health care DELIVERY system/insurance. ‘For profit’ insurance–with its big bonuses–sounds like a conundrum.
They are feeding you propaganda, how would he know anything about us. He only looks at few cases, and I can tell that this is all biased. Yeah there might be times where you wait for like 30 minutes but on average nothing is too bad. I’ve lived in Canada my entire life and I have to say everyday I am thankful for our healthcare system. I can say this for every Canadian I know there has never been any complaints.
THIS REPORT ON CANADIAN HEALTHCARE IS TOTAL GARBAGE.
our healthcare system isn’t perfect, but it isn’t NEARLY as bad as its made out to be in this report. VERY POOR journalism, and LIES LIES LIES!
as a canadian, i would know- and most canadians wouldn’t give up government run healthcare for anything!
This video is almost solid bullshit from the second it started….I wonder how much big pharma paid 20/20 for this?!!??
Yep, we’ve been lied to A LOT about Canada’s health care system for A LONG, LONG, LONG time!!!
I know people in Canada, and it isn’t even NEARLY as bad as what we’re being told. Flat out lies, and look what the avg. person in the US spends on health care vs. the average person in Canada–even extreme rural Canada–it isn’t even close.
